Maternal Newborn Nursing Care

COURSE DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE - This course will prepare nurses, with little or no obstetric background, for clinical preceptorship in the Labor, Delivery postpartum setting.  Course content includes a review of female reproductive anatomy and physiology and focuses on the physiologic and pathophysiologic processes associated with labor and delivery.  Frequently encountered complications of pregnancy and the common medical and pharmacologic interventions are discussed.  Nursing assessments and interventions during the intrapartal period are emphasized throughout the course.  It also provides the theoretical background necessary to prepare nurses to begin caring for mother-infant dyads during the postpartum period and includes a discussion of the goals and advantages of couplet care, assessment of postpartal newborn problem and appropriate nursing interventions.  Postpartal and newborn teaching protocols, based on principles of adult learning, as wells as topics of proper perinatal documentation, medico-legal aspects, culturally competent care, and high risk social behaviors and the relationship to perinatal care will also be addressed.  This course does NOT include a clinical component or neonatal resuscitation instruction.  This course includes Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring and Postpartum Care

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK – Lowdermilk, D.L. & Perry S.E. (2007) Maternity & Women’s Health Care, 9th Edition. Mosby: St. Louis, MO.    Students are responsible for purchasing this text book prior to the first day of class.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT – Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 07257.  Credits are provided only if attendance is recorded for each day of class and you receive a passing grade on the course examination.  Approximately 65 contact hours are provided for this course.

PRETEST REQUIRED – All students are required to take a pretest prior to the first day of class. The exam will takes approximate 2 hours.   

COURSE SCHEDULE – This class takes place over six weeks; two days each week.  Class starts at 8:00 am and ends around 4:00 pm (with a couple of exceptions) every day.   The next class will take place on: July 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31, August 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 , and 21, 2012

COURSE FEE(S)Fee for MNNC is $650.  Refreshments are provided; lunch is not included.

REFUND POLICY - Refunds will be given if written or telephone cancellation is received by June 29, 2012 A processing fee of $100 will be assessed for all refunds.  If cancellation is received after the cancellation deadline you will be charged $300.

Basic Fetal Monitoring

COURSE DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE Basic fetal monitoring is a workshop developed for the RN with 0-6 months experience in L&D.  The course will define methods of monitoring, instrumentation, physiology and pathophysiology of the FHR, FHR characteristics, as well as review common antenatal testing methods.  By the end of the course, the participant will be able to recognize basic FHR patterns and describe appropriate nursing interventions.  Both lecture and practical strip review will be utilized to assist the learner.  This course is a part of the Maternal Newborn Nursing Care Course (MNNC).  If you are registered for the MNNC, you do not need to sign up for the Basic Fetal Monitoring course separately.

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK –
There is no required textbook for those students taking the Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring section only.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
– Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 07257.   Seven (7) contact hours are provided for this course.
 
PRETEST – Pretest is not required for those students wishing to take the Basic Fetal Heart Monitoring section only.

COURSE SCHEDULE – This course takes place over two days.  The next class will be held on: July 23 and 24, 2012

COURSE FEE(S) $125 –
Course fee is $125.  Refreshments are provided; lunch is not included.

Post Partum Care

COURSE DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE - This 4-day course, based on principles of adult learning, provides the theoretical background necessary to prepare nurses to begin caring for mother-infant dyads during the postpartum period.  The course will cover the following topics: discussion of the goals and advantages of couplet care, assessment of postpartal newborn problems and appropriate nursing interventions, postpartal and newborn teaching protocols, topics of proper perinatal documentation, medico-legal issues, and high risk social behaviors and their association to perinatal care.  This course does NOT include a clinical component or neonatal resuscitation instruction.  This course is a part of the Maternal Newborn Nursing Care Course (MNNC).  If a student is enrolled in the MNNC, there is no need to sign up for the Post Partum class separately.

OB Post Anesthesia Care

Program Objectives           

*  To update clinicians on anesthesia and post anesthesia recovery care guidelines and complications as they relate to the obstetric patient.

*  To update clinicians on basic EKG interpretation as it relates to the obstetric patient.

*  To provide simulated hands-on training for high risk obstetric scenarios.

Nursing Accreditation - Under the California B.R.N. guidelines, participants will receive a total of 13 contact hours for attending both sessions.  Both days must be attended to receive CEU credit.  Participants will receive CEU certificate after completing the conference evaluation form.

Skills Stations (day 2) - Perinatal CNS/Educators from throughout the community will assist participants in demonstrating their skills using various case scenarios: OB Code, OB Hemorrhage and EKG.

Cost - The registration fee is $185.00.  Pre-registration is required for all attendees as space is limited.  Registration fee includes CEUs, conference materials, lunch and refreshments.  Confirmation information will be submitted after the registration deadline.
